Description

The Mazda 787 and 787B are Japanese endurance prototype race cars developed by Mazda for Group C competition in the World Sportscar Championship during 1990 and 1991. Designed by Nigel Stroud, these cars were powered by a 2.6-liter R26B four-rotor engine, known for its distinctive rotary sound. The 787 debuted in 1990 with limited success, but the upgraded 787B achieved a historic victory at the 1991 24 Hours of Le Mans. Drivers Bertrand Gachot, Volker Weidler, and Johnny Herbert secured Mazda’s first and only overall win at Le Mans, thanks to the car’s superior reliability compared to its rivals. Following changes in regulations favoring piston engines, the 787B was replaced by the MXR-01 in 1992, which experienced mixed results in competition.
